William Quenette
William “Bill” Quenette was born to William E. and Clara L. Quenette. William was raised in West Fargo and graduated from West Fargo High School in 1951. In the fall of that year, William began his post-secondary education at Concordia College in Moorhead. During those first two years, William played football, basketball, and baseball for the Cobbers. In 1953, William enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany, where he played football, and baseball for the 4th Division Special Troops. Following his military service, he returned to Concordia College, where he completed his degree in education and was a captain & standout multi-sport athlete for the Cobber football, basketball, & baseball teams. It was upon his return to Concordia that William met his wife Andy. They married in 1957.
Following graduation, William accepted faculty and coaching positions at Concordia College where he remained for two years until moving to Washington to obtain his Master’s degree at Washington State University in 1960. After completing the Master’s degree program, William returned to his teaching and coaching positions at Concordia College. In 1962, William was recruited to teach physical education and start the basketball and baseball programs at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Washington. He and his growing family remained in Washington until 1966, at which time they chose to return to the Fargo-Moorhead area. William spent the remainder of his career teaching physical education at Moorhead High School until his retirement in 1993. He coached football, boys and girls basketball, baseball, and golf for the Moorhead Spuds from 1966 to 2005. In addition to coaching for the Spuds, William also served stretches as volunteer basketball assistant at Concordia College (1982-1984) and as a football assistant at Fargo Shanley High School (1993-1995). William has received multiple awards for his contributions to 47 years in education and coaching. Highlights include inductions into the Concordia College Athletic Hall of Fame (1990), the Minnesota High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame (2004), the Minnesota High School Coaches Hall of Fame (2012), and, most recently, induction into the Moorhead Hall of Honor (2016). Outside of teaching and coaching, William spent a very active life with his wife Andy, their four children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends. William passed away on February 28, 2013.
